Rosie O’Donnell Just Broke Kimmel’s Summer Ratings

ideko

Rosie O’Donnell hasn’t hosted a late night show in decades. And yet somehow she just out-rated basically every other guest host who’s sat behind Jimmy Kimmel’s desk this summer. Not a fluke, not a rounding error – she straight up won the ratings race while Kimmel’s off doing whatever hosts do on their summer break (tanning, probably, or yelling at ABC executives, who knows).

Okay, So What Actually Happened

Every summer, “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” rotates through a parade of guest hosts while Kimmel takes his usual break. It’s basically an audition tape disguised as a vacation policy. This year we got the normal mix of comedians and famous friends filling in, and the numbers have been… fine. Respectable. Nothing to write home about.

Then Rosie showed up and the numbers jumped. Like, noticeably. She’s now sitting at the top of the guest host list for the whole summer run, according to the ratings data making the rounds this week. And look, I’ll admit I didn’t see that coming. Rosie’s had a weird few years, public fallouts, a move to Ireland, all that. She hasn’t exactly been the late night “it girl” of 2026.

The Comeback Nobody Called

But here’s the thing – people forget she’s actually really good at this. She hosted her own talk show for six years back in the 90s and won a pile of Emmys doing it. That muscle doesn’t just disappear. Put her behind a desk with a live audience and she knows exactly what to do with it.

Why Would Anyone Tune In For This?

I think it’s curiosity, honestly. People wanted to see what she’d do with the chair. Would she play it safe? Would she go full Rosie and just say whatever she wants? From what I can tell, she leaned into being herself, a little chaotic, very opinionated, not afraid to go off script. And that unpredictability is exactly what a guest-hosted show needs, because nobody’s tuning in expecting the same monologue rhythm Kimmel does every night.

“She’s not trying to be Jimmy. She’s just being Rosie, and that’s why it worked.”

That’s basically the whole story in one line, isn’t it? The guest hosts who flop are usually the ones trying to imitate the format instead of just doing their own thing. Rosie clearly didn’t get that memo, or ignored it on purpose, and it paid off.

What This Says About Late Night Right Now

Late night TV has been in this weird limbo for a few years now. Ratings down across the board, younger viewers watching clips on their phones instead of sitting through a full episode, hosts constantly getting compared to their YouTube-era predecessors. So when a 60-something former talk show host beats out younger, buzzier guest hosts, that tells you something. It’s not about age or “relevance” in the way networks think it is. It’s about whether the person on screen actually seems like they want to be there.

Not gonna lie, this also feels like a bit of a vindication moment for Rosie personally. She’s taken a lot of hits publicly over the years, some deserved, some pretty unfair if I’m being honest. Beating the ratings of hosts half her age, on a show that isn’t even hers, in a summer slot that’s basically network TV’s dumping ground for lower stakes content… that’s a statement. A quiet one, but still a statement.

What This Actually Means

I don’t think ABC is about to hand Rosie a permanent desk or anything dramatic like that. But I do think this puts her back on people’s radar in a way that matters, both for her and for how networks think about guest hosting going forward. Maybe the lesson here isn’t “hire younger” or “hire trendier.” Maybe it’s just hire people who know how to fill a room, camera or no camera.

Kimmel’s still Kimmel, and he’ll be back behind his own desk soon enough. But for one summer, at least, Rosie O’Donnell reminded everybody why she was good at this in the first place. Whether that turns into anything bigger… we’ll have to see.
