Bridgerton Shocker: Chris Fulton’s Fate With Eloise?

ideko
It’s official, or at least it feels like it’s official in my gut: something is up with Sir Phillip Crane. And if something is up with Sir Phillip, then something is definitely up with Eloise Bridgerton’s future. Because, let’s be real, you can’t have one without the other, can you? Not if you’ve actually read the books. Which, you know, we all have. Or at least, we should have.

Where’d He Go, Anyway?

Look, I’ve been watching this show since day one, like a hawk. And when Chris Fulton popped up as Phillip Crane in season one, I clocked him immediately. He was the guy, right? The future husband. The widower. The guy who, let’s be honest, kinda got stuck with Marina Thompson in a pretty wild, sad, and frankly, a bit convoluted storyline involving his dead brother, a secret baby, and a whole lot of societal pressure. It was a lot. And Fulton played it perfectly – a bit awkward, a bit earnest, totally out of his depth.

He was there, he did his duty, he married Marina. And then… poof. Almost. We saw him briefly in season two, a quick check-in on Marina (who was, tragically, still not doing great). But since then? Nada. Crickets. Silence. It’s like he just vanished into the ether, which, if you’re a book fan, is a really, really big problem. Because his story, his real story, is just getting started. I mean, it’s Eloise’s story. It’s supposed to be.

The Book of Eloise, Not the Show’s Choice?

For those who live and breathe Julia Quinn’s novels – and I know you’re out there, because you’re my people – you know To Sir Phillip, With Love is the fifth book. It’s Eloise’s turn. It’s her adventure. And it’s all about her and Phillip, these two pen pals who eventually, awkwardly, and totally charmingly, fall in love. It’s one of the best ones, if I’m being honest. It shows a different kind of love, a slower burn, a more intellectual connection that blossoms into something beautiful. And it features Phillip Crane. Not just a Phillip Crane, but that Phillip Crane. The one from season one. Chris Fulton’s Phillip Crane.

So, What’s the Hold Up, Shondaland?

This is where my journalist brain (and my inner fan girl) starts to itch. Why the radio silence? Why keep him off-screen for so long? Bridgerton has done some serious shuffling before, sure. They moved Benedict’s storyline around, they tweaked characters, they even introduced entirely new plot points. But completely sidelining a character who is so central to a main Bridgerton sibling’s future? That feels… different. That feels like a choice. And not necessarily one I’m thrilled about.

“The beauty of Bridgerton has always been its balance: giving us the romance we crave while also respecting the source material. But with Phillip Crane, it feels like they’re walking a very fine line.”

The Big Questions: Recast or Rewrite?

So, here’s the thing. There are a few possibilities here, and none of them feel entirely satisfying if you’re a purist.

1. They just haven’t needed him yet. This is the most charitable interpretation. Maybe they’re just waiting for Eloise’s season to really kick off, and they didn’t want to waste screen time on him. But that feels a bit flimsy. He’s a main character in a book! A pivotal one.
2. They’re going to recast him. Oh, boy. This one could get messy. Recasting a character who’s already been established, even briefly, is always a gamble. Fans get attached. And while Chris Fulton hasn’t been on screen a ton, he is Phillip. Changing him now would definitely ruffle some feathers. (And I’d be one of those ruffled feathers, just so you know.) It happened with Francesca, but she was barely seen, a quick blink-and-you-miss-it. Phillip? Not so much.
3. They’re going to change Eloise’s story entirely. And this, my friends, is the one that gives me chills. Not good chills. Like, “oh no, what have they done” chills. Eloise is an icon. She’s smart, independent, witty. Her story with Phillip is unique because it’s not love at first sight, it’s a meeting of minds, a shared understanding that grows. To strip that away, to give her a different love interest just because they couldn’t make the original actor’s schedule work (or whatever the reason is)? That would be a huge disservice to the character and to the fans. I mean, it would be a betrayal, frankly.

I’ve seen shows do this before. They get popular, they decide they know better than the source material, and they go off script. Sometimes it works, but more often than not, it alienates the very people who loved the original story in the first place. And for a show like Bridgerton, which thrives on its loyal book readership, that’s a dangerous game.

What This Actually Means

If I had to put money on it, I think we’re probably looking at a recast. It’s the least disruptive option, even if it’s still a bit jarring. Changing Eloise’s whole storyline would be such a monumental shift that I just can’t see them doing it without a major outcry. And honestly, it wouldn’t make sense narratively either, given how much they’ve already set up with Marina and the Crane family. You can’t just erase that history. It’s part of the fabric of the show, however small it felt at the time.

But whatever they do, they need to address it. Soon. Because Eloise’s season is coming, and you can’t just have her suddenly find some random new duke (or whatever) without acknowledging the Sir Phillip shaped hole in her narrative. The fans, myself included, are watching. And we’ve got opinions. Strong ones. This is big. Really big. And they better get it right.
