One possibility is that we’re in the “trough of disillusionment” phase of the classic hype cycle. The initial excitement was overblown, yes, but the technology is real and useful. Over the next five years, as the hype fades and expectations normalize, we’ll see steady, unsexy adoption of AI tools that provide genuine but modest value. Not a revolution exactly, but a meaningful evolution in how work gets done.
Another possibility is that we’re on the verge of a real breakthrough that makes current concerns look silly. Maybe GPT-5 or Claude 4 or whatever comes next really will be that much better. Maybe the infrastructure being built now will suddenly prove prescient rather than premature.
Or maybe – and this is the scenario keeping VCs up at night – we’ve already picked most of the low-hanging fruit. Maybe the easy gains from AI are mostly realized, and further improvements will be incremental rather than revolutionary. Maybe that means the current investment levels are completely unjustifiable, and we’re headed for a correction that’s going to be painful for a lot of people.
The honest answer is that we won’t know which scenario we’re in until we’re already there. Technology prediction is hard, especially when massive financial incentives are distorting everyone’s perception of reality.
What I do know is this: the gap between AI investment and AI adoption isn’t closing as fast as investors expected. That gap has to resolve somehow – either adoption accelerates dramatically, or investment pulls back sharply, or we muddle along in this weird intermediate state for longer than seems sustainable.
