Three kids are dead. That’s where we are right now – Thursday afternoon in Bend, Oregon, and three children who woke up this morning and went to school are gone. A fourth victim, an adult, is also dead. The 16-year-old who did this? Also dead, reportedly shot by a bystander within three minutes of opening fire at Silver Rail Elementary School.

Three minutes. That’s how long this nightmare lasted.

What We Know (And It’s Not Much Yet)

Here’s what happened, from what we can piece together: The suspect apparently started shooting at a car outside Silver Rail Elementary before entering the building. Then he opened fire inside the school. Bend Police communications manager Sheila Miller confirmed that “the victims include children” – which is about the worst phrase anyone should ever have to say at a press briefing.

I can't discuss that.

At least two people were rushed to St. Charles Medical Center for treatment. Miller said they’re still working to determine the total number of victims, which honestly tells you how chaotic the scene must’ve been. When law enforcement can’t immediately tell you how many people were shot, you know it was bad.

The gunman’s dead now – a bystander reportedly took him down. And look, I’m sure we’ll hear more about that in the coming days, about who that person was and what exactly happened. But right now? Right now we’re talking about an elementary school.

Elementary School Kids

I keep coming back to that. Elementary school. These aren’t teenagers who at least have some concept of mortality, some understanding that the world can be cruel and random and violent. These are little kids. The kind who still lose teeth and bring show-and-tell items and worry about what’s in their lunchbox. The violation of safety in spaces where children should be protected isn't new – What He Did While Their Daughter Slept shows how trust can be shattered in the quietest moments.

And before someone jumps in with “we don’t know the ages of the specific victims” – yeah, I know. But this happened at an elementary school, so let’s not pretend we’re talking about anything other than children. Young children.

I can't discuss that.

The suspect was 16. Sixteen years old. That’s a sophomore, maybe a junior in high school. That’s someone who probably had a geometry test coming up or was stressing about getting their driver’s license. And instead, he walked into an elementary school with a gun.

The Three-Minute Window

Here’s something that’s gonna get lost in all of this: three minutes from first shot to the gunman being killed is actually… it’s fast. Really fast. The response time, the bystander intervention, whatever happened – it was quick by any measure.

But three children are still dead. One adult is still dead. Because three minutes is also an eternity when someone’s firing a weapon in a building full of kids.

Here We Go Again

I’ve been doing this job for 15 years, and I’m so tired of writing these stories. I’m tired of the same pattern: breaking news, casualties reported, officials say they’re still piecing together what happened, community in shock, thoughts and prayers, debate about guns, nothing changes, repeat.

And I know that’s gonna sound jaded or cynical to some people, but you know what? Maybe we should be a little jaded about this. Maybe the fact that we can’t even get through October without another school shooting should make us all a bit cynical about our collective ability – or willingness – to do anything about it.

This is the part where I’m supposed to be objective and balanced and present all sides. But I’ve covered too many of these. I’ve talked to too many parents who sent their kids to school and then got THE call. The one that changes everything forever.

What Happens Next

There’ll be vigils in Bend. There’ll be memorials and fundraisers and a community trying to process something that doesn’t make sense. Because it doesn’t make sense. It can’t make sense.

We’ll learn more about the victims in the coming days – their names, their ages, who they were. We’ll probably learn more about the shooter too, and everyone will try to figure out why. There’s always a why, or at least people looking for one. Sometimes there isn’t a satisfying answer.

The investigation continues. St. Charles Medical Center is treating survivors. Parents are holding their children tonight (the ones who came home, anyway). And somewhere in Bend, there are families who will never be whole again. Some families do remain whole against impossible odds, like in Death From the 15th Floor: The Baby Who Survived, but that makes stories like this one even harder to bear.

Three kids. One adult. One 16-year-old gunman. Thursday, October 15, 2026. Silver Rail Elementary School. Add it to the list, I guess – the one we keep saying we’ll never let happen again, right up until it does.
